Create a better work environment
The ever elusive ‘Work-Life Balance’ is the career utopia that most still fail to find. What was meant to bring talent to the table, particularly those with children, has long grown moldy and left workers feeling as though they were duped instead of experiencing the have-it-all life.   Even though many flexible schedules are being reeled back in, in favor of the 40+ hour work week, there are at least 4 things you can do to create a better work environment for your employees that will make them feel appreciated and still in charge of their lives and work spaces. Autonomy is key, especially for the millennial worker, so pay attention and see which of these you can implement in your office now that Summer days are giving way to Autumnal routines.

4 Ways To Create A Better Work Environment This Fall

Curb The Meetings: Let’s face it. Every office has just too many meetings and certainly more than a few that could have been a company-wide email or one that could have been better left to line managers to do with their employees in smaller groups.   No one loves drawn out meetings with repetitive verbiage. You can avoid a lot of groaning and blank stares by taking a minute to decide or getting an opinion on whether something is meeting worthy.   One way to cut down on the meeting times is to write down an agenda on the white board, or sent it out in an email ahead of time and agree with the group that the meeting needs to and will stay on topic.   Acknowledge Individual and Company Successes: If there is ever one thing that most people will say is the greatest problem in their work environment is it (lack of) communication. Secondly, most employees start looking for greener pastures when they work so hard for so long without accolades.   We want our employees to feel appreciated, don’t we? The simplest way to create a better work environment and increase the comradery is to let people know when someone has done a good job and make a big deal when everyone is doing a great job.   As a small business owner, success is directly attributed to how well you manage those that work for you. Keep that in mind when productivity slows down or quality starts to wane.   Help Them Understand What Is Expected: Far too many small businesses think they are too small for an employee handbook. The problem becomes that the only way employees know when they have done something wrong is when they are being reprimanded. Ask anyone how they feel about being chastised for not knowing something they were never told. You get the picture. If you want your employees to perform in concert with your expectations, you need to tell them what they are. An employee handbook, signed by the employee during onboarding, will help you and your new employee both know what expectations are from the onset. Clear directions are something everyone can smile about.   Offer Coverage They Can Count On: There are plenty of companies that offer cut-rate insurance packages to small businesses. Unfortunately, their coverage often coincides with their meager monthly premiums. Employee benefits that can’t be used when they need them makes employees feel like their employer doesn’t care to offer something that helps them when they need it.   Many small business owners would love to offer better plans but can’t afford the rates. PEOs do a wonderful job of taking on the task of payroll, HR and employee benefits management so small business owners can take advantage of better insurance rates and happier employees who can count on their benefits covering them if they get sick.   If you’d like to find out more about how PEOs can help to create a better work environment for your company this year, you can find out how they work by talking to a PEO broker like PEO Spectrum who can give you the lowdown on PEOs without any money out of your pocket.
